What have you been up to in the last three months?Roberta Sheffield

I competed at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy as part of the Canadian Para-Equestrian Team on Evelyn Little’s horse Bindro T. I finished individually 4th, just outside of the medals by a tiny margin, in the Grade 3 division. As a team, Canada finished 8th. The WEG is the biggest Para-Equestrian ever held. It was a wonderful experience and it has left me even hungrier to work harder for a medal at the Rio Paralympics.

Since the WEG, I have won the British Dressage/ KBIS Insurance Para National Championship on my younger horse, Double Agent. She was my reserve horse for the WEG and I am hoping she will be my ride for Rio 2016.

What’s coming up?

I am currently preparing my younger horse, Double Agent, for more International competition next Spring. We may well be flying out to compete at Palm Beach, Florida next January/February. That would be super exciting!

I have already qualified Double Agent for the British Dressage Open Winter Championships in March next year.

What does a typical week look like for you?

My training schedule has relaxed a little now as I have only one horse in full training and I am in the middle of bringing my older, more advanced horse back into work after he has had time off to recover from injury. I picked up a knee ligament injury during the summer and am now taking the time to get that properly healed after being patched-up to compete. I will be getting back to my pretty hardcore gym work once that is back together again.

During the winter, I am working on developing the skills needed by my younger horse by introducing more advanced exercises.

Since I have been home from the WEG, I have been spending more time coaching other riders and their horses. It is lovely to be able to pass on the knowledge and training that has been given to me.

Upcoming aims?

We are on the Road to Rio now so it is to maintain, improve and develop performance and to try not to pick up injuries on the way! It is only18 months away…

What will your LEAP award support you with?

‘’My LEAP award will help support me to train and compete at the highest level. There are many partners in my success of which LEAP makes a very special contribution.’’
