The social value of sport and physical activity in Lincolnshire

Sport and physical activity do more than keep us fit. Being active make us happier, healthier, and more connected. A new report from Sport England shows just how much of a difference being active makes in Lincolnshire.

The Social Value of Sport and Physical Activity Report (2022/23) reveals that being active created £1.44 billion worth of benefits for Lincolnshire last year. This value is split into primary and secondary value.

Primary Value: £1.19 billion of personal benefits people gain from being active from feeling healthier, happier, and less stressed. This is measured using the government’s WELLBY method, which puts an economic value on improvements in life satisfaction:

  • £1.07 billion from adults being physically active.
  • £116 million from people volunteering in sport.

Secondary Value: £140.5 million of savings to society, including:

  • £97 million saved in NHS costs (fewer GP visits, hospital stays, and medications).
  • £43.5 million saved from improved mental health (less need for counselling and sick leave).

What Does This Mean for Lincolnshire?

Being active isn’t just good for individual health, it’s good for the whole community. It saves money, boosts wellbeing, and builds stronger, happier neighbourhoods.
