Sports England's Summary Of This Advice

It recognises that mourning is very personal and it is anticipated that individuals, families, communities and organisations may want to mark Her Majesty’s demise in their own way. There is no expectation on the public or organisations to observe specific behaviours during the mourning period.

There is no formal obligation for organisations or national governing bodies (NGBs) to postpone or cancel sporting fixtures or events at either elite or grassroots level between now and the State Funeral.

Instead, it is up to the discretion of individual organisations and sports to consider how they should proceed during the mourning period.

As a mark of respect, organisers may wish to hold a period of silence and/or play the National Anthem at the start of events or sporting fixtures, and players may wish to wear black armbands.

On the day of the State Funeral, organisations might wish to consider cancelling or postponing events or closing venues. They are under no obligation to do so and this is entirely at the discretion of individual organisations. If sporting fixtures or events at either elite or grassroots level are planned for the day of the State Funeral, organisations may want to adjust the event timings so they do not clash with the timings of the funeral service and associated processions.

Sport England advise all sports clubs to refer to their own NGB to check for any sport-specific decisions that have been made.

Dear Colleagues

We are deeply saddened by the news of Her Majesty The Queen's death and wanted to get in touch now that we will be entering a national period of mourning.

As her loss is felt deeply around the country, we know that many organisations will also have practical questions about how best to approach this time. As an arms-length government body we have received official guidance from DCMS on immediate actions. And we expect to hear specific guidance soon which will cover things like planned sporting events that we will share with you as soon as possible for you to cascade through your own networks.

Immediately we will be directing partners and the public to the Royal website and GOV.UK for the primary sources of information about the period of national mourning and the state funeral arrangements.

In terms of communications, for your awareness, we have posted an official message of condolence on our social media channels and changed our website to a black overlay.

Any businesses or other organisations wishing to pay their respects by half-masting flags or holding silences are invited to follow the guidance available on the DCMS pages of GOV.UK.
