With Mental Health Awareness Week upon us, we are excited to let you know about a new programme of activities coming to Lincolnshire, thanks to support from the Managed Care Network and the Mental Health Promotion Fund.
There is a huge amount of evidence to support the benefits that physical activity can bring to people experiencing mental illness, such as helping people deal with and overcome the everyday obstacles that come with living with poor mental health and generally improving overall health and quality of life.
For the past couple of years, Active Lincolnshire have been committed to developing our work in this area; our Think Active programme alongside Lincolnshire Partnership Foundation NHS Trust, other health services and local leisure and physical activity deliverers across the county has seen the upskilling of workforce to help embed physical activity into every-day life.
We understand and advocate the importance of ensuring everyone has access to physical activity and our new Think Active support groups will add to the great work and opportunities that are currently available across the county. The Think Active Support Groups will provide physical activity sessions for people living with low level mental illness or with a history of poor mental health.
They will provide local and accessible activity sessions that people will enjoy and can trust in, while feeling supported and surrounded by like-minded people, to help with the management of individual needs with regards to mental health.
The activity on offer will vary from location to location and will depend on the interest and expertise of the ambassador or leader and local access and demand. As well as the physical activity element, the groups will create a peer support network with the ambassadors or leaders being equipped with the information and skills to have conversations around mental health on a 1-2-1 basis and within a group environment.
The groups will provide regular opportunities to get active and at the same time provide a social environment to meet and have conversations with like-minded people; thereby improving the mental and physical health of participants.
