Our Finalists
Cherry Judo Club
Cherry Judo Club have worked tirelessly to help bring inclusion to judo. The club believes that every person, regardless of their abilities or disabilities, deserves access to the sport, and for this reason they run Adaptive Judo sessions for those with physical, mental, or emotional disabilities. Club members include individuals with visual impairments, Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and other physical and mental disabilities. In addition to the above, the club are LGBTQ+ welcoming, as they have members who are going through transition.
The club is dedicated to creating an environment where everyone feels safe, supported, and accepted. Coach Barry is passionate about access to all for the sport, and as such is currently working on the JESP (judo empowerment for send pupils) initiative, which stems from recognition of the unique challenges faced by SEND pupils in the Lincoln area due to lack of facilities. His plans look to not only increase facilities at the club, but also to be able to use those facilities on an outreach basis, taking judo to SEND schools and provisions.
Barry's dedication to adaptive judo recently saw him take three of his judoka over to Wales to compete in the British Adaptive Open - European Judo Union Get Together competition, bringing back two bronze and a gold medal.
Metheringham Primary School
After listening to pupils, Metheringham Primary School have introduced a girls-only football programme this year. This has been a significant step towards fostering greater participation and enthusiasm for sports among female students.
The girls-only football programme at Metheringham offers a supportive environment for girls to engage in football, develop their skills, and experience team sports. The school also offer mixed teams, but the girls only teams address the comfort levels of female students. It aims to ensure a balanced sports offering and encourage broader participation.
The program includes intra- and inter-school competitions for girls, fostering healthy competition and sportsmanship. Leadership opportunities are also available, with experienced students taking on roles such as coaches, referees, and organizers, supported by a female FA referee. After-school clubs and training sessions cater to all skill levels, promoting inclusivity and continuous improvement. The programme has grown successfully since its launch and is now supported by a fully qualified female coach. Funding has been secured for a girls-only football kit, and the offer is promoted via newsletters, social media, and assemblies.
