Active Workplace Award Finalists

Proudly sponsored by Lincoln Students' Union

The Active Workplace Award recognises a business, charity or organisation that has created a work environment encouraging employees to be more active, more often. It recognises workplaces that have given options for staff to be more active and created opportunities for physical activity within work hours, and / or outside of work.

Our Finalists

Neonatal Unit at Lincoln County Hospital

In memory of a colleague who sadly died, a team of ten neonatal nurses from Lincoln County hospital took on the challenge of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks! The team taking part in the challenge trained hard over many terrains from the Lake District to the Peaks and the Lincolnshire Wolds. This challenge sparked an incredible movement in hiking and mountain climbing across the entire neonatal team, with staff immersed in either supporting and cheering the team on, arranging hikes as part of training or providing inspiration by going on their own hikes and climbs.

The challenge has encouraged teamwork, comradery and fitness amongst neonatal staff. Alongside their hiking adventures the neonatal unit has its own running group: ‘Flinders Fun Runners’ and recently two members have taken part in the Rob Burrows Leeds Marathon.

The neonatal unit is on the top floor of the maternity wing; and the team are encouraged to walk the stairs, rather than used the lift to help bring activity into their working day.

Shine Lincolnshire

April 2024 saw Shine take part in a month of getting active. This was to encourage the team to move more alongside raising awareness of Carer’s Active April. The entire Shine team were split into four small groups, which competed to clock up the most miles in any way they could. Miles were tallied up to produce a leader board each week, with an overall winning group for the month.

July saw the second Shine Cup Day, for which Shine Lincolnshire joined forces with local sports clubs to deliver a day of inclusive football taster sessions cumulating in members of Shine playing a local football team in order to win the Shine Cup!

South Kesteven District Council

South Kesteven District Council fosters a healthy work environment where staff feel valued and encouraged to stay active. Each month, TeamSK introduces a theme for employees to try new skills, including physical activities. In September 2023, 100 employees participated in a rounders tournament. In October, a skipping challenge encouraged daily movement. November saw 40 staff join a 5-a-side football tournament, raising funds for White Ribbon UK. In January 2024, TeamSK joined One You Lincolnshire’s 21.4 challenge, allowing diverse activities like gardening and cycling. Discounts with fitness providers were expanded in March, and in May, 10 employees completed the "5k a day" challenge.

Activities were also put on to support Mental Health Awareness Week including cycling, breathwork, yoga, and drumming sessions. In June, the council promoted Bike Week, highlighting the Cycle to Work Scheme. In July, building on the excitement around the Euros, staff played an 11-a-side football match, with new female participants taking part in football for the first time.
