Lincolnshire hosted the Egyptian Paralympic Team for one week before the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
A team of 56; 40 athletes and 16 support staff conducted a one-week training camp in Lincoln, Louth and Boston from Saturday 18th – Friday 24th August 2012, in preparation for the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
They trained for athletics at the Princess Royal Sports Arena in Boston, powerlifting at the Meridian Leisure Centre in Louth, and table tennis and volleyball at the University of Lincoln.
How did our training camp help?
At the Paralympic Games, the team won 15 medals!
4 Gold Medals – Powerlifting
4 Silver Medals – 3 in Powerlifting, 1 in Athletics
7 Bronze Medals – 4 in Powerlifting, 2 in Athletics, 1 in Table Tennis
The team were accommodated in Lincoln at The Holiday Inn Express and as well as daily training sessions and rigorous meal times, the Egyptian Paralympic Team also had the chance to explore different parts of Lincolnshire including Butlins in Skegness, Lincoln Castle and Cathedral, Boston Town Centre and Primark (which we struggled to get them out of!)
A team of 75 volunteers were recruited to support the Egyptian Paralympic Team, without whom the week wouldn’t have been possible. Members of the Arabic Society of Lincolnshire and many Egyptian families supported with translation, whilst physiotherapists and support volunteers were needed to assist the team during their training sessions. Volunteers were easily identifiable by their yellow t-shirts!
During the Egyptian Paralympic Team’s Pre-Games Training Camp in Lincolnshire, more than 200 people took part in Community Training Sessions with all of the teams at their venues. The sessions were well received by all, and the athletes were very eager to get involved!
