Torch Relay

More than 100,000 people lined the streets to celebrate the Olympic Torch Relay in Lincolnshire.

The Olympic Torch passed through every district as it made its way through Lincolnshire in June and July, with thousands of schoolchildren, parents, families and friends lining the streets to celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

More than 150 inspirational people carried the Olympic Torch through streets lined with crowds from Legbourne on the East Coast to Thurlby near Bourne. 50,000 people crowded in Skegness on Wednesday 27th June, and more than 30,000 cheered on the Torch as it travelled through South Holland on Wednesday 3rd July, before it left Lincolnshire for the final time.

13-year old Anya Snow carried the flame through Winthorpe on the first day the Torch was in Lincolnshire. Anya, who combatted meningitis at the age of 9 months, was nominated for her dedication to sport in her hometown of Scunthorpe. She said carrying the Olympic Torch was nerve-racking, but exciting:

“When I found out I was to carry the flame I was excited, but also a little bit scared. I started to realise how lucky and privileged I was to have been chosen. It was a once in a lifetime experience and an honour to carry it along with so many famous people all over the country.”

“We were taken to the part of the route we were running and as I got dropped off I saw my family and friends from school. It felt amazing, I felt like a superstar! As I ran with the Torch, my friends chanted my name so loudly it made me giggle and I felt amazing. Everyone was waving and cheering and I knew I was doing something really special. The Torch got a bit heavy so I swapped hands but before I knew it I was passing the flame on. Those 300 metres went so quickly but I shall remember them for the rest of my life.”

Anya was one of 166 Torchbearers lucky enough to carry the Olympic Torch in Lincolnshire, all embracing the cheering crowds and communities who lined the route to get a glimpse of the golden flame. This week, as the Olympic Torch lights the cauldron in the Olympic Stadium in London, millions of people across the UK and thousands of people from across Lincolnshire, can say that they’ve truly been part of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
