Maya Westlake

15 year old Maya Westlake is a swimmer from Lincoln.

Most memorable achievement:

Achieving my first ASA National Youth qualifying times has been my most memorable achievement. It is what I have been aiming towards for some time.

August Blog:

In May was the Midland Championships, it was a crammed pack weekend, a lot of swims, not much turnaround time, a very competitive field of my age group swimmers, not the best pool to swim in, bottom end of age group (15/16 years, so still another year in that age group) but a successful weekend. Achieved three personal best times and won three bronze medals.  Entered 7 events during the weekend and qualified to swim in 7 finals although had to pull out of three due to the finals being so close together.

At the end of May I attended two open meets, both at Sheffield and achieved 4 ASA British Gas Senior National times/second Olympic trials in June. Plus my 400 free Youth National time for July.

20th/21st/22nd/23rd June

British Gas ASA Senior National/second Olympic trials in Sheffield.

I aim to absorb the experience of swimming against the best swimmers in the UK and be able to take what I have learnt with me to the Youth Nationals in July.

I am qualified for 4 events but due to a tight programme will only be swimming 3. I qualified for 50, 100 & 200 back and 200 freestyle.)

17th/18th/19th/20th/21st July

British Gas ASA Youth Championships again in Sheffield.

I aim to make a semi-final and final in my age group and to achieve some long course personal best times.  I want to enjoy the events as I have still got another year in the age group.  I qualified for 5 events, 100, 200 & 400 free and 100 & 200 Back.  I will be swimming all these events plus one team relay.

My training will continue up to and throughout these competitions, training 8/9 sessions a week.

Maya also competed in 5 swims and a club relay.

She was the fastest 15 year old girl in the 15/16 year old 200 free final with an outstanding time of 2.02.44 finishing in 4th place, just 0.05 off a bronze medal.  She smashed the 15 year old age club record, held by Lizzie Symonds. She can now also claim the 100 free club record.

Maya finished in the top 16 in all her events in her 15/16 year old age group.

5 events, 4 semi-finals, 1 final, 8 personal best times.  Broke 2 club records (100 and 200 free) and 2 county records in the same events.

March Blog:

During February/March I have competed in the Lincolnshire County Championships.  I am Senior County Champion in 200 Individual Medley and 200 Backstroke.

Within my age group I achieved 7 Gold medals and 3 silvers and within the Open Age Group I achieved 2 Golds, 5 silvers and 2 bronzes.  I got a personal best time in all my swims apart from 100 back.

I claimed a Lincolnshire County Record in 50 Backstroke.

I have 2 or 3 meets at Ponds Forge Swimming Pool in Sheffield, 31st March I will be competing at the Premier Open Meet, 15th April Radford Open Meet and possibly May 26th/27th May.  I already have three National times ready for July, but at these meets I am hoping to get more qualifying times.

The Midland Championships take part in Coventry Pool on 5th/6th May and I am hoping to get into the finals and medal in my swims.

I will be training up to and through all these competitions, training 8/9 times a week, morning and evening along with 3/4 land training sessions a week.
