The 2019 School Games County Final, organised by Active Lincolnshire and hosted by Grantham Meres Leisure Centre had it all! Teamwork, self-belief, respect, passion, determination, honesty and resilience.

The School Games started with an Opening Ceremony, where the 701 athletes from 50 different schools and their teachers paraded around the stadium with banners, Lincolnshire flags and huge smiles lighting up their faces.

It was also an opportunity for local dance groups from Sutterton Primary School and The Richmond School to perform their winning dances from the School Sports Partnership County dance competitions. The dances were imaginative and wonderful to watch, even when the music ended early for one group. This glitch brought out the true School Games spirit as the dancers continued on regardless with the full support of the all the athletes and the 150 spectators cheering them on. Clearly leaving a lasting impression as many students said their favourite part of the day was the opening dance.

There were nine sport finals run on the day: Golf, Hockey, Tennis, Sportshalls Athletics, Goalball, Inclusive Golf, New Age Kurling, MLD (mild learning difficulties) Athletics and the Change 4 Life Zone. Many of these sports were inclusive sports providing opportunities for all children to take part at every level.

In order to run all these sports smoothly the Active Lincolnshire team enlisted the help of 152 young volunteers. These volunteers came from a variety of partners including inspire+, Positive Futures, Grantham Tennis Club and Grantham Rotary. School Games Organisers also helped to recruit 100 volunteers from Priory City Academy, Sir William Roberton School, Queen Elizabeth High School, Skegness Grammar and Bourne Grammar School.

The atmosphere on the day was joyous, with athletes, teachers, volunteers and spectators all supporting and encouraging every student to do their best. Even away from the sporting events the day was buzzing with a packed market place providing a climbing wall from GLL, bouncy castle and MUGA (multi use games area) from the Lincolnshire YMCA as well as dance workshops and a chance to try out some crazy catch with England Netball.

We can’t wait to do it all again, bring on 2020!
