Active Lincolnshire is launching LEAP 2017 – Lincolnshire’s Elite Athletes Programme – with a new look and new opportunities to get involved.
The programme was created in 2008 to provide bursaries to potential sporting talent in Lincolnshire. In the past, it has supported some famous names at the start of their careers; Olympic hockey gold medallist Shona McCallin and motor racing driver Jack Harvey who has just competed in the Indy 500.
Speaking at the Lincolnshire Sports Awards 2016, international hockey player Shona McCallin said: “I am grateful to the support of LEAP, which helped me with the cost of training and kit when I was a developing player.”
For the first time the 2017 programme has a sponsor, Firstaid4Sport, who will be working with Active Lincolnshire to increase the number of athletes that it supports.
Lynsey Norris, from Active Lincolnshire said: “I am delighted to announce that our headline sponsor is Firstaid4sport. With their support, we are able to offer bursaries to a number of athletes. They are also helping us to launch the LEAP Supporters Club which gives people the opportunity to join and support athletes. The joining fee is £250 and members are able to display the LEAP banding on their communications, plus have their name added to our and Firstaid4sport’s websites.”
Michael Davison, MD of Firstaid4sport said: “We are delighted to be working with Active Lincolnshire to spearhead this initiative. Our business cares passionately about sport, from grassroots participants to those making their way in the world of elite sport. Without support from programmes such as these, many future stars struggle to pay for basic items such as entry fees, travel and kit.”
“I want to also help develop the LEAP Supporters Club as I believe that there are many businesses and individuals who care as much as we do about nurturing talent. By working together, we can achieve a lot for the county and hopefully launch the careers of future Olympians.”
Active Lincolnshire would like athletes to apply for the funding from 1 June – 7 July. There are two categories of support:
• Athletes competing on the national (England) & international (Team GB) stage may receive up to £1,000.
• Athletes competing at Lincolnshire County level for their sport may receive up to £250.
