Hockey Heroes Crowned Lincolnshire’s Sport Personalities of the Year 2016

Hockey players Shona McCallin and Georgie Twigg were honoured as Lincolnshire’s Sports Personalities of the Year at the Lincolnshire Sports Awards last night.

Athletes, coaches, volunteers, schools and workplaces from all over Lincolnshire gathered at the Epic Centre, Lincolnshire Showground for a night of celebration and inspiration.

This was the twelfth year that Active Lincolnshire has hosted the awards, and this was the biggest event yet with more than 380 guests.

Janet Inman, CEO of Active Lincolnshire, said: “The Sports Awards are a glittering celebration of an amazing year of sporting success.

“What an amazing evening! Thank you to all the sponsors for your support, we couldn’t do it without you.”

The headline sponsor this year was Riseholme College, a part of Bishop Burton College.

Jeanette Dawson OBE, Chief Executive and Principal of Riseholme College said: “We are so proud to be the main sponsor for the Lincolnshire Sports Awards 2016, recognising the amazing achievements of the county’s sports stars.

“We are delighted to be able to support this prestigious event. Congratulations to all those who were shortlisted, you are all winners already!”

A total of 16 awards were presented throughout the night, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was won by Ian Turner from Pentaqua Swimming Club, and the Michael Beard Coach of the Year award, won by Olympic swimming coach and former athlete Mel Marshall.

Other winners included Young Sportswoman and Young Sportsman of the Year won by water polo player Naya Patel and table tennis star Tom Jarvis respectively.

Twice throughout the evening the awards were trending nationwide on social media platform, Twitter.

An amazing night was had by all, and one thing is for sure, Lincolnshire certainly let the UK know sport and physical activity is important in our county.
