Without school sport, everyone loses

The government has recently announced a 150m investment into primary school sport, three years after drastically cutting its budget.

With this investment comes the introduction of more sport and competition in approximately 280 primary schools in Lincolnshire, as well as improved training for teachers and additional sporting opportunities.

As we enter a new school year, I cannot emphasise the importance of this investment and what it means to provide young people access to both school sport and the competition that comes with it.

The return of healthy and active competition in schools is the key to the delivery of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic legacy of inspiring future generations.

School sport provides children with the opportunity to excel at activities outside the classroom environment. For children who are naturally competitive, competing in the sports hall or on the athletics track is a great motivator and gives young people, whatever their academic ability, an opportunity to shine.

And while the physical benefits that sport provide to children are evident, we must also remember that the psychological and social benefits are abundant as well.

School sport develops life-long skills that can’t be taught in a classroom. Peer interaction and self-control, the development of confidence and problem solving skills, and an appropriate form of stress and anxiety release all contribute towards developing young people.

Providing sport, competition and other extra-curricular activities to every young person in Lincolnshire will be a victory for us all.
