A leisure centre in Gainsborough has been awarded £90,000 from the Big Lottery Fund.

Everyone Active at West Lindsey Leisure Centre has been successful in receiving the £90,000 to provide free after-school multi-sports clubs for primary schools in and around Gainsborough for the next 2 years.

The clubs will take place after school, either within the leisure centre itself or within the schools’ premises.

Charles Baines Primary School was one of the schools in April 2012 that assisted Everyone Active in its funding application, by allowing them the opportunity to pilot the multi-sports clubs to their pupils, aged from 5 – 11 years.

Headteacher Nigel Walter said: “The pupils really benefitted from these high quality PE sessions. They were able to try out a range of sports and they became more aware of their health and fitness.”

40 children were involved and completed the 10-week pilot programme that resulted in them feeling fitter and more confident in doing a range of sports.

The pupils’ enjoyment is best summed up by the following quote: “I thought it was brilliant because I liked the games they played and the sports they did. They made it enjoyable for all of us.”

The multi-sports programme, which will launch from April 2013, has been provided to give children and families greater access to physical activity programmes within their local community, for a much healthier lifestyle.
