England Netball’s Back to Netball scheme has been named the National Lottery Sports Project of the Year 2012.

The national project, delivered locally by Lincolnshire County Netball, is aimed at female netball players aged 16 plus, either as beginners or returners to the sport.  The emphasis is on social, non-competitive, fun sessions.

Almost 500 ladies in Lincolnshire and more than 9,000 women across the UK have taken up netball thanks to the initiative.

Katy Ritchie, National Development Manager for England Netball, said:

“So many people have been involved in the success of Back to Netball and the award represents four years of hard work. Back to Netball coaches have inspired women across the country to return to the sport and it proves that there is a real thirst for traditional female sport out there.”

Locally, Lincolnshire County Netball has been named ‘County Sports Organisation of the Year’ at the Active Lincolnshires Awards 2012, and to celebrate the Back to Netball scheme in Lincolnshire, a tournament was held in Lincoln last weekend. Nine teams from Lincolnshire and neighbouring counties took part in the event at Dean’s Sport and Leisure at Lincoln College.

Louise Key, Lincolnshire Netball Development Officer, said:

“Winning the National Award for Back to Netball and being recognised locally at the Active Lincolnshires Awards has been great, but having nine Back to Netball teams playing and enjoying the sport in a fun and social setting this weekend tops it all. The tournament is the second of five over the next few months, and has been hugely successful so far.”

Grantham Back to Netball team secured the top spot at the tournament, with Newark ladies finishing second, and Blaby Wildcats from Leicestershire third.

Janet Inman, Chief Executive of Active Lincolnshires Partnership said:

“Active Lincolnshires Partnership supports initiatives that promote people to become more active and lead healthier lifestyles. The ‘Back to Netball’ scheme has proved very popular in Lincolnshire and the rest of the UK – it’s a great project and really encourages ladies to get involved in sport.”

Back to Netball sessions in Lincolnshire take place in Grantham, Sleaford, Lincoln, Bassingham and Louth.
