Slea Paddlers will be holding a series of Canoe and Kayaking sessions over the summer, thanks to funding from Sportivate.

Due to the overwhelming success at their ‘Go Canoeing Day’, the club, which is based in Sleaford, recognised that there was a demand for local people wanting to try a new and exciting sport.

Paul Pattinson, Slea Paddlers’ Sportivate Co-ordinator, said: “As a club we have grown steadily in numbers over the past six years since the club was formed. Canoeing and kayaking can be challenging but also very rewarding. Our programme of six sessions will follow the British Canoe Union’s Paddler Sport 1 Star syllabus in both a mixture of canoes and kayaks. The equipment necessary to participate will be provided by the club and all our coaches are fully qualified and CRB checked.”

Sportivate is a national programme, managed by Sport England and delivered by Active Lincolnshire Partnership, which funds six-week sport sessions to encourage teenagers to take part in sport.

Lucy Blakey, Children and Young People Officer at Active Lincolnshires Partnership, said: “Slea Paddlers are working really hard to promote canoeing and kayaking to young people. I hope that the funding secured through Sportivate will allow them to encourage more youngsters from the area to try a sport they perhaps have never tried before.”

A programme of six sessions will run between 2pm and 3pm on the following dates: 8th July, 22nd July, 5th August, 19th August, 2nd September and 16th September 2012. The sessions will take place on the River Slea between the Eastgate car park slipway and Cogglesford Mill, Sleaford. There are 10 spaces available and there will be a small charge of £1 per session.
