LEAP athlete Abigail Burr broke one of Lizzie Simmonds’ Club Championship records at the weekend.

Abi, who swims for the Lincoln Vulcans Swimming Club, competed in their annual Club Championships at Yarborough Leisure Centre on 16th and 17th June 2012.

Competing in the Girls, 13-year-old age group, all of Abi’s hard work and training paid off when she won both the 400m Individual Medley and the 200m Freestyle with Championship record times.

Abi lowered the 200m Freestyle record by 2 seconds, which was previously held by the Team GB Olympic squad member Lizzie Simmonds.

Abi was delighted with the result. She said: “It’s amazing when I think that I have swum faster than Lizzie did in this competition when she was my age.”

Both records had stood since 2004. Fred Furniss, LVSC Head Coach said: “It is a great achievement for Abi to take one of Lizzie’s records and we now look forward to the Age Group National Championships in July.”

Abi, who lives in Heighington, is a member of the Lincolnshire Elite Athlete Programme (LEAP) run by Active Lincolnshires Partnership.

Rachel Belcher, LEAP Project Officer at the Partnership, was delighted to hear the good news: “This result for Abi is excellent. She’s had a great season so far and breaking two championship records is a great achievement for her. We’re very proud to have her on LEAP and wish her the best of luck for her other events.”
